Weaving and Material Studies

A shibori woven sample where the user can make their own pleats

In my weaving developments I used a collection of S and Z high twist wefts to create my pleats and twists. When I changed the twist or changed the pattern from weft faced to warp faced, the pleats changed columns or directions which resembled the gills I studied in the mushrooms I foraged at Hampstead Health.

In my shibori woven development I decided to develop a way for the user to create their own pleats. By weaving in a weft in between my twill it allows the user to pinch or spread apart parts of the textile to their liking. You can view how this works by playing the video to the left.

A view of my workspace in Chelsea as I was developing my samples to find the perfect way too weaving my pleats

Mixing the dye to paint on the warp. The red and black combined to make the pinkish grey you see to the left. When more gum is added, the lighter the colour.
